The Director of Security provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and administrative direction for hospital-based Security department. This role is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, associates, and medical staff while aligning operations with organizational mission, values, regulatory requirements, and Michigan law.
This position oversees Beacon employed staff and serves as a key liaison between hospital leadership, clinical partners, regulatory agencies, and external law enforcement. In addition to security and police operations, this role provides oversight of associate badging, mailroom operations, and Kalamazoo operator services.

Operational Leadership
- Direct and manage daily operations of the Security department to ensure effective, compliant, and responsive services.
- Lead, coach, and develop Security Officers including hiring, scheduling, performance evaluation, and discipline.
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels, including oversight of schedules, holidays, and coverage needs.
- Oversee departmental training programs to ensure competency, readiness, and compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.
- Manage departmental equipment and ensure personnel are properly trained and equipped.
- Develop, manage, and monitor departmental operating budgets; identify and correct variances.
Program Quality and Risk Management
- Ensure high-quality customer service and timely resolution of security-related concerns or complaints.
- Conduct regular tours of hospital facilities and grounds to identify risks and improvement opportunities.
- Ensure officer rounds, reports, and activity logs are completed accurately and timely.
- Review incident reports and oversee investigations related to theft, loss, injuries, or security incidents.
- Serve as a liaison with regulatory agencies, accreditation bodies, and public safety partners.
Legal, Regulatory, and Clinical Collaboration
- Ensure department operations comply with Michigan law, healthcare regulations, and accreditation standards.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of Michigan criminal law, arrest authority, and hospital-based law enforcement practices.
- Provide leadership and guidance related to behavioral health encounters, including protective custody under Michigan’s Mental Health Code (PA 330).
- Collaborate with clinical leadership, risk management, and administration on safety, emergency response, and behavioral health matters.
Leadership and Organizational Engagement
- Serve as a security and public safety resource for all hospital facilities.

Ancillary Operations Oversight
- Provide operational oversight for associate badging, including access control coordination, badge issuance standards, and compliance with security policies.
- Oversee mailroom operations, ensuring secure, timely, and efficient handling of internal and external mail and deliveries.
- Manage Kalamazoo operator services, ensuring appropriate staffing, training, professionalism, and customer service standards.
- Ensure these functions are aligned with Beacon policies, regulatory requirements, and service expectations.
- Collaborate with Facilities, IT, Human Resources, and clinical leadership to support operational continuity and access needs.
Organizational Responsibilities

Required Qualifications
Education, Experience, and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, Public Safety, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in security or law enforcement, including management or supervisory experience.
- Prior experience as a sworn, certified law enforcement officer.
- State of Michigan law enforcement certification through the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) is preferred, but not required for this position.
- Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) certification through the International Association of Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS) or the ability to obtain a CHPA.
Desired Qualifications
- Former or current MCOLES certification.
- Knowledge of hospital security and healthcare law enforcement operations.
- Familiarity with Michigan’s Mental Health Code (PA 330), including protective custody and coordination with behavioral health services.
- Prior leadership experience in a healthcare-based security or law enforcement environment.
- Experience managing contracted security services.

Working Conditions
- Requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time throughout the workday.
- May need to vary days and hours as determined by the departments' needs. Also, longer work hours may be required under emergency conditions.
