Job Summary
The Security Officer serves as a vital, high-visibility ambassador for campus safety, dedicated to fostering a secure and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This role balances proactive safety patrols and emergency responses with a strong commitment to customer service and community engagement. The ideal candidate will be a calm, professional presence capable of managing technical security protocols while building positive relationships with the school community. This position is Monday through Friday, from 2:00pm -10:00pm.
Essential Functions
- Patrols assigned areas on foot, in an assigned utility vehicle, or other specialized vehicles to ensure the security of individuals, buildings, and equipment
- Patrol and monitor parking lots, athletic fields, and other outdoor areas to ensure safety and security for the property. Assist with morning and/or afternoon carpool procedures.
- Examine doors, windows, gates, and other access points to ensure they are properly secured. Use school issued keys to open and close buildings and monitor secured facilities for unauthorized people and/or suspicious activities.
- Report and inform individuals of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or possession of prohibited items.
- Provides escort services for visitors and offers public assistance to those on campus.
- Observe and report irregularities such as security breaches, facility safety hazards, and emergency situations. Contact emergency responders (police, fire, EMS) when necessary.
- Remains alert for unauthorized individuals and/or security code violators. Approach suspicious people and/or notify police as appropriate. Maintain visual contact and monitor suspicious people until law enforcement arrives.
- Prepare routine and standardized reports documenting incidents, observations, and activities.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must possess a valid driver's license
- Must possess (or be eligible to obtain immediately) a St. Louis County/Metropolitan Security License
- Strong verbal/written communication and basic computer proficiency (Word, Excel, Email)
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods and respond quickly during incidents. Moderate physical activity includes handling average weight objects, and working outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1+ year of security experience, specifically within a school or campus environment
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED Certification
- Experience in conflict resolution or de-escalation techniques
- Ability to perform security patrols independently
- Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service mindset
- Ability to remain calm, professional, and effective in emergency situations
- Knowledge of safety codes, regulations, and procedures, with the ability to enforce them
- Skill in providing personal protection and safety services
- Ability to identify problems, assess situations, and notify appropriate personnel
- Ability to operate and troubleshoot two-way communication devices
Other Information
- A criminal history and background check is required and must be successfully completed.
- Work environment includes exposure to some hazards or physical risks, requiring adherence to safety precautions.
- Occasional overtime and holiday work is required. Possible weekend rotation may be implemented for additional coverage.
- Additional responsibilities and projects may be assigned at the School’s discretion.
