The Security Officer plays a key role in ensuring that our school remains a safe and nurturing environment for our students, staff, and visitors. This position involves monitoring school premises, enforcing safety protocols, and responding to incidents and emergencies. The Security Officer should be committed to maintaining a secure and supportive environment and have the skills to handle a variety of security challenges.

The Security Officer should be a self-starter, resourceful, well-organized team player with the ability to work well under pressure and demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills. The ability to work effectively with diverse personalities is a necessary skill. All employees are strongly encouraged to work towards proficiency in both French and English languages and to develop familiarity with the Lycée's multicultural environment.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities ( Title And Description)
The duties outlined below are considered to be the most significant responsibilities of the Security Officer and are essential for effective performance in this position. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Principle Accountabilities
- Daily tours: Patrol school grounds to ensure a safe environment, watching for any suspicious activity or unauthorized individuals.
- Visitor Screening: Control access to the school by ensuring staff, students, parents with school issued IDs badge in/out, and checking the identification of any person unknown to the security officer.
- Safety Incident Response: Respond to emergencies, such as fights, medical incidents, or threats, and assist law enforcement or emergency personnel when needed.
- Conflict Resolution: Mediate disputes between students, staff, or visitors, using de-escalation techniques to defuse conflict.
- Emergency Drills: Participate in and help coordinate school safety drills, including evacuation, lockdown, secure perimeter or shelter .
- Report Writing: Document incidents, accidents, or violations of school rules, maintaining clear and accurate records of all security-related matters.
- Policy Enforcement: Ensure compliance with school policies, including rules regarding access control, prohibited items, and student behavior.
- Surveillance: Operate, monitor and test security cameras, alarm systems, and other surveillance tools to detect potential safety threats.
- Collaboration with School Staff: Work closely with school administrators, counselors, and teachers to identify potential security issues and promote a safe learning environment.
- Student Support: Provide a positive presence and foster relationships with students, promoting a sense of safety and well-being.
- Crisis Intervention: Intervene in situations involving potential self-harm, bullying, or other student welfare concerns, and provide appropriate support or referral.
- Building Inspections: Conduct regular inspections of school facilities for potential security risks, such as unlocked doors and broken security equipment.
- Training: Stay updated with security protocols and receive ongoing training in areas like first aid, emergency response, and conflict de-escalation.
- Coordination with first responders : Communicate with first responders providing relevant information when necessary to maintain a secure and facilitate appropriate emergency response.
- Assume the duties of the Security Supervisor in their absence when delegated to do so.
- Complete other duties as assigned and appropriate
Qualifications And Skills
Education/Experience
- Graduation from an accredited high school or Possession of an acceptable equivalency high school diploma is required.
- NYS Certified Security Officer
- At least two years of security experience working with the public. Experience working in law enforcement.
Skills/Abilities
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions, and to prepare clear and comprehensive oral and written reports in English.
- Ability to learn and to apply standard security procedures and practices, with minimal direct supervision within weeks after employment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to build positive relationships as well as communication, crisis de-escalation and physical intervention skills.
- Strong observational and analytical skills.
- Ability to remain calm and composed in emergency situations.
- Proficiency in using office equipment, security systems and technology platforms, including Google Workspace and other security related applications.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs and patrol for extended periods.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and move objects up to 25 lbs.
- Must be able to respond quickly to emergencies and assist in evacuations if necessary.
Additional Requirements
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as required (one Saturday per month at a minimum)
