Security Officer
Dates: August 31, 2026 - June 30, 2027

The District is seeking a qualified and professional School Security Officer / Armed School Security Officer to support a safe, secure, and welcoming educational environment for students, staff, and visitors. The successful candidate will provide a visible security presence, assist with emergency preparedness and response, monitor school facilities and grounds, and work collaboratively with administrators, staff, students, families, and emergency responders. The position will require the lawful concealed carry of a firearm in accordance with all applicable laws, district policies, training requirements, and administrative authorization.
Qualifications
- Retired law enforcement officer in good standing, where required by district policy
- Valid CPR/AED certification required
- Valid New Jersey RPO (Retired Police Officer) permit to carry a handgun applicable to the assignment
- Valid Armed Security Officer Registration Act (SORA) certification
- Must be willing to obtain the New Jersey School Safety Specialist certification.
- Prior experience in law enforcement, school security, public safety, emergency management, or a related field preferred
- Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or appropriate employment authorization
- Candidates must satisfy all New Jersey legal, licensing, permit, training, qualification, and district authorization requirements prior to carrying a firearm on school grounds
Performance Responsibilities
- Provide a visible, professional security presence throughout assigned school buildings, grounds, parking areas, athletic facilities, and other district property
- Monitor entrances, exits, hallways, common areas, and exterior grounds to support a safe and secure school environment
- Assist with visitor management procedures, including screening, verification, and compliance with district sign-in procedures
- Ensure exterior doors remain secured and address unauthorized access, door propping, or other security concerns promptly
- Respond to security incidents, disturbances, medical emergencies, alarms, suspicious activity, and other safety concerns as directed
- Assist with student arrival, dismissal, parking lot supervision, bus activity, and crowd control during events and activities
- Support administrators during investigations by providing observations, documentation, and security-related information
- Prepare clear, accurate, and timely written reports regarding incidents, hazards, violations, or unusual activity
- Monitor and report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, access-control concerns, security camera issues, or facility security needs
- Assist with emergency drills and implementation of district emergency response protocols, including lockdowns, evacuations, shelter, secure, hold, reunification, and fire drills
- Communicate promptly with the Director of Security, building administration, or designee regarding any significant safety or security concerns
- Work cooperatively with local law enforcement, fire officials, EMS personnel, and other responding agencies as directed
- Utilize security systems and technology, including access control systems, visitor management systems, radios, alarms, and security cameras
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students, staff, investigations, emergency procedures, and district operations
- Enforce school rules, Board policies, administrative regulations, and lawful directives in a fair, professional, and consistent manner
- Attend required meetings, drills, trainings, and professional development activities related to school safety and security
- Strong communication, observation, documentation, and conflict-resolution skills
- Ability to remain calm and professional in emergency or high-stress situations
- Ability to build positive working relationships with students, staff, families, and community partners
- Strong judgment, professionalism, and situational awareness
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism at all times
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent, Director of Security, building administrator, or designee
Compensation: Up to $63,000.00 annually
Benefits: No pension option. No benefit option.
