ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND
The New Children’s Museum’s (NCM) mission is to spark creativity, exploration, and a sense of
belonging through interactive art experiences. Located in downtown San Diego, the New
Children’s Museum collaborates with contemporary artists to design and create art installations
and educational programs for children.
Our vision is to be the most innovative, most loved, most inspiring, and most sustainable
children’s museum in the world. Our interactive art installations and hands-on art programming
provide creative and educational experiences for children and families. We work with artists to
reimagine our spaces so that there is always something “new” to discover when you visit. As a
nonprofit institution, we rely on daily admissions, memberships, and community support to fund
our daily operations.
Position Overview
Security Officers at The New Children’s Museum ensure Museum Guests and Staff experience
a safe environment while they visit the Museum and the surrounding outdoor areas. The
Security Officer’s role is to observe and react intuitively and quickly, constantly modeling a
respectable presence. Through this role, Security Officers create an atmosphere in which all can
play comfortably and safely.

Key Responsibilities
- Monitor Museum entrances and exits.
- Responsible for opening and closing Museum entrances and exits as well as the gates
in the Children’s park.
- Patrol the external Museum surroundings, including Museum Park and Parking Garage.
- Responsible for maintaining employee information in the Museum’s Siemens SiPass
Access Control System.
- Be familiar with the closed circuit TV and fire alarm systems.
- Responsible for coordinating annual active shooter training and conducting quarterly
emergency evacuation drills.
- Work closely with San Diego’s Clean & Safe program and SDPD RSVP volunteers to
proactively manage the homeless issue in our park.
- Respond to evacuations or emergency situations, both outside and inside the Museum.
- Document incidents and injuries that occur within the Museum footprint and provide first
aid as needed.
- Deter undesirable activity outside of the building by providing a firm and respectful
presence and/or by contacting other authorities and needed.
- Make periodic rounds of the Museum Floor, appropriately reacting to visitor and staff
safety needs and/or communicating installation integrity needs.
- Maintain a constant awareness of Museum rules, procedures and policies while
modeling impeccable level of integrity for our visitors, staff, vendors and all other guests.
- Restock inventory at first-aid locations.
- Assist with load outs/ins as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Education/Experience: High School diploma
- Current Guard Card Certification
- Enthusiasm for working with children and families.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple
priorities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm in emergency situations and make quick decisions.
- Ability to self-motivate and remain on-task without immediate supervision
Preferred Qualifications
- Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
- 5+ years of security experience or other relatable experience
- Fluency in Spanish.
Physical Requirements And Equipment Usage
- Walking, Standing, and Sitting: The duties and responsibilities of this position will be
performed in a stationary position (standing or sitting) for approximately 75% of the
workday and will require movement throughout museum spaces to interact with visitors
and educators and to activate museum experiences.
- Lifting: Occasional lifting and moving of furniture, equipment, and supplies weighing up
to approximately 100 lbs.
- Manual Dexterity: May operate various equipment, including but not limited to power
tools and sharp tools.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is in-person at The New Children’s Museum and is based in the dynamic and
collaborative environment of the organization. The majority of this work is performed in the busy
Downtown, Museum environment with constant ambient noise at moderate levels and requires
observance of safe work practices, fire regulations, and avoidance of falls, trips, and similar
office work hazards. A portion of this position does require outdoor exposure to elements. Due
to the nature of the position, weekend and holiday hours will be required.
Compensation & Benefits
- Compensation: This is an hourly position at $19.06/hour.

- Paid sick days, with 2 days available for immediate use.
- 3 floating holidays.
