Training and Payment
- CDHS/DYS will pay for the training period
- Total training duration: 6.5 weeks
- 3.5 weeks of Academy Training
- 3 weeks of On-the-Job Training (YCTO) - Youth Care Training Orientation
Work Schedule
- Work Week: Sunday – Saturday
- Working Hours: Full Time - 30-40 hours/week
Requirements
- Driver's License required
- Travel required for:
- Transportation of youth in state vehicles
- Travel to assigned trainings and/or alternate work sites
- Academy attendance in Grand Junction, Denver, or Colorado Springs
Employment Contingencies
- Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of:
- DYS Pre-service Training Academy
- Field Training Program (FTO)
- Mandatory annual training in all subject areas

Position Overview
- Provides 24-hour/7 days per week supervision of youth in DYS State Operated Secure Facilities
- Direct-care and essential position
- Maintains safety and security through appropriate supervision of youth
- Organizes and directs daily living and leisure activities of youth
- Follows living unit master schedule, shift supervisor and/or other administrative direction
- Provides corrective cognitive, emotional or behavioral experiences within a youth center program using a trauma responsive approach
- Adheres to prevailing legal standards, CDHS Policy, DYS Policy, DYS Audit Standards and youth center specific procedures
- Serves a complex adolescent population with various behavioral health disorders, trauma, and criminal behaviors

- Golden or Greeley candidates must travel to south Denver for orientation (1.5 hours each way from Greeley for 3 weeks)
- Pueblo and Colorado Springs candidates attend orientation in Colorado Springs
- Grand Junction candidates attend orientation in Grand Junction

Core Job Duties
Direct Care and Supervision
- Provides direct care, supervision, safety, and security of youth in a secure facility
- Continuously observes and manages youth behavior
- Enforces rules and intervenes in crises using de-escalation techniques
- Uses approved physical responses when necessary
- Conducts searches and monitors for contraband
- Maintains safety protocols including suicide prevention
- Implements behavioral or safety plans
- Makes real-time decisions about youth behavior, safety interventions, and appropriate communication methods
- Evaluates and manages youth with diverse needs
- Maintains appropriate boundaries
- Ensures safety without excessive force
- Adheres to agency policies and standards at all times
Documentation and Record Keeping
- Provides accurate and timely documentation of:
- Youth behavior
- Unit activities
- Searches
- Incident reports
- Status updates (Suicide Precaution Monitoring and Medical Watch)
- Maintains records in both hard copy and digital systems (TRAILS database)
- Handles legal and property documentation
- Ensures critical youth information is properly communicated to relevant parties
- Completes suicide risk assessments within required timeframes
- Reports any abuse as mandatory reporters under state law
- Determines necessary details for accurate reporting and smooth staff transitions
- Follows complex reporting protocols and adapts to changing data systems

- Maintains a respectful, positive, and professional environment within the Youth Center
- Communicates respectfully with all individuals including:
- Youth

Training and Professional Development
- Actively participates in all assigned training
- Successfully completes required testing or skill demonstrations

- DYS Pre-Service and Youth Center Orientation
- Current mandatory training
- Assigned online modules through Cornerstone
- Maintains physical readiness
- Supports the agency's behavioral management strategies
- Prepares for and engages with training effectively
- Masters required skills and retains/applies new knowledge
- Demonstrates proficiency at an acceptable pace
